Disposable Vape Alternatives UK: What to Use Now That Disposables Are Banned
Single-use disposable vapes were banned in the United Kingdom on 1st June 2025 under the Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (England) Regulations 2024 and equivalent legislation across Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The ban applies to non-rechargeable, single-use vaping devices that cannot be refilled or recharged. The legal alternatives available to adult vapers aged 18 and over include rechargeable prefilled pod kits with replaceable pods, open-system refillable pod kits used with nicotine salt e-liquids, and rechargeable vape pen devices. All these alternatives are currently available and fully legal under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 and MHRA notification requirements.
Why Were Disposable Vapes Banned?
The Reasons Behind the UK Disposable Vape Ban
The UK government announced its intention to ban single-use disposable vapes in January 2024 and the ban came into force on 1st June 2025. Two main drivers were behind the decision.
Youth vaping
Disposable vapes became the dominant product used by under-18s who were vaping illegally. Their low upfront cost, widely available flavours, and bright packaging made them accessible and appealing to young people in a way that other vaping products were not. Research cited by the government showed a threefold increase in vaping among 11 to 17 year olds in the years following the widespread adoption of disposable vapes.
Environmental damage
An estimated five million disposable vapes were being discarded every week across the UK at the height of the market. Each contained a lithium battery and plastic components. The vast majority were not being recycled properly. The cumulative environmental cost in terms of electronic waste, lithium waste, and plastic pollution was significant. The ban was partly framed as an environmental protection measure as well as a youth protection one.

What the Ban Actually Means
What Is Banned and What Is Not
The ban is more specific than many people initially realise. It applies exclusively to single-use, non-rechargeable vaping devices. It does not apply to:
• Rechargeable vaping devices with replaceable or refillable pods
• Open-system refillable vape kits and vape pens
• Nicotine-containing e-liquid in compliant 10ml bottles
• Replacement pods for rechargeable devices
• Disposable pods that are inserted into a rechargeable device (these are the pods in prefilled pod kits, not whole disposable devices)
The distinction is straightforward. If the device can be recharged and the pod or cartridge can be replaced or refilled, it is legal. If the entire device is designed to be thrown away when the battery or liquid runs out, it was banned on 1st June 2025.
Option 1: Prefilled Pod Kits
The Closest Like-for-Like Replacement for a Disposable Vape
A prefilled pod kit is the most direct replacement for a disposable vape in terms of user experience. The device is rechargeable, USB-C charged, compact, and simple to use. The pod, which holds 2ml of nicotine salt liquid at up to 20mg strength, slots into the device and delivers vapour when you draw on it. When the pod is empty, you replace it. You never refill anything or change any components.
From a user perspective, the experience is very close to using a disposable. You draw on it, it produces vapour, it delivers nicotine. The two practical differences are that you need to charge it occasionally and that you swap the pod rather than the entire device when it runs out. Most people who switch from disposables to prefilled pod kits adapt within a day or two and find the performance is actually better, more consistent flavour delivery, more reliable battery management, and a draw that does not fade as the battery dies.
Cost comparison: disposables vs prefilled pod kits
When disposables were legal, a typical single device cost between £5 and £10 and delivered somewhere between 600 and 3,500 puffs depending on the model. Heavier vapers were spending £30 to £60 a week on disposables.
With a prefilled pod kit, the upfront device cost is between £7 and £15 and is a one-off purchase. Replacement pods cost between £3.99 and £8.99 and last considerably longer than a disposable of similar puff count because the battery management in a rechargeable device is more efficient. The monthly saving for most vapers who switch from disposables to a prefilled pod kit is significant.
Which prefilled pod kits are the most similar to disposables?
If you used a particular disposable vape brand, there is likely a prefilled pod kit from the same manufacturer or the same family. Some direct examples:
• Used Elf Bar disposables?
The Elf Bar Elfa Pro, Elf Bar Plus 12, and Elf Bar Dual 10K are all rechargeable prefilled pod kits from the same brand with a similar flavour range.
• Used Lost Mary disposables?
The Lost Mary Tappo, Lost Mary BM6000, and Lost Mary Nera 30K offer the same Lost Mary flavour quality in a legal, rechargeable pod kit format.
• Used IVG Bar disposables?
The IVG Air, IVG Smart Max, and IVG XL 35K carry the IVG e-liquid expertise forward into the legal pod kit format.
• Used SKE Crystal Bar disposables?
The SKE Crystal Plus and SKE Crystal CL6000 are the direct successors in SKE's range.
Option 2: High-Puff Prefilled Pod Kits
Higher Puff Counts for Heavy Vapers
If you were a heavy user of disposable vapes and the idea of changing pods every day or two feels inconvenient, the high-puff prefilled pod kits in our range are worth looking at. These devices are larger than the compact entry-level options but they deliver far more puffs before a pod change is needed.
• Hayati Pro Ultra Plus 25000:
25,000 puffs per device. A serious option for heavy vapers who want minimum maintenance.
• IVG XL 35K:
35,000 puffs. IVG's highest-capacity pod system, with the e-liquid quality that IVG is known for.
• Titan X 50K:
50,000 puffs. For vapers who want the absolute maximum time between pod changes.
• Bloody Bar 60K:
60,000 puffs. One of the highest-capacity devices in the entire UK market.
Option 3: Open-System Pod Kits with Nic Salts
More Flexibility, More Flavour Choice
An open-system pod kit is a rechargeable device where you fill the pod yourself using a bottled nicotine salt e-liquid. This gives you access to a much wider range of flavours and allows you to fine-tune your nicotine strength between 10mg and 20mg as you see fit.
The trade-off compared to a prefilled kit is a small amount of extra involvement. You need to fill the pod yourself, which takes about thirty seconds. You need to wait a couple of minutes for the coil to saturate before vaping. And you need to order your e-liquid separately from your device. For many vapers this trade-off is worth it for the increased flexibility and the lower per-ml cost of bottled nic salt versus replacement pods.
We stock open-system Geekvape pod kits alongside a range of nic salts from brands including Pod Salt, Riot Squad, Nasty Juice, Old Pirate, Pacha Mama, Pukka Juice, Twelve Monkeys, and SKE Crystal.
Helping You Make the Switch
Not Sure Which Alternative Is Right for You?
The answer for most people who are coming from disposable vapes is a prefilled pod kit. It is the simplest switch, the closest experience to what you were using before, and the most direct way to stay vaping without any significant adjustment to your routine. Start with a compact prefilled kit in the 6,000 to 15,000 puff range and a flavour that matches what you were enjoying in your disposable.
