What is a prefilled pod system and how does it work
A prefilled pod system is a rechargeable vape made of two parts: a small battery device and a sealed pod that comes already filled with e liquid and a built in coil. You inhale, the coil heats the liquid into vapour, and when the 2ml pod empties you click in a fresh one. The device is reused for months, so it is convenient, low waste and fully legal in the UK.
These kits took over after the disposable ban for a reason. They feel close to a disposable to use but cost far less to run. We test every kit we sell, so this guide walks you through how the parts work together and what to expect.

What is a prefilled pod system?
A prefilled pod system, also called a closed pod system, pairs a reusable battery device with sealed pods. Each pod arrives filled at the factory with a fixed amount of e liquid and a coil already inside it.
You do not mix or pour any liquid. When the pod runs dry you remove it and replace the whole thing. That is the key difference from an open system, where you refill an empty pod with your own bottled liquid.
How does a prefilled pod vape work?
Inhaling on the mouthpiece triggers the device. Most pod systems are draw activated, so there is no button to press. A sensor detects the airflow and tells the battery to send power to the coil.
The coil is a small heating element sitting in the pod, wrapped in a wick that soaks up the e liquid. Power heats the coil, the wick feeds liquid onto it, and the liquid turns to vapour that you breathe in. Stop inhaling and the device powers down again.

Charging the device
You charge the battery device, not the pod. Modern kits use a USB C port and most reach a full charge in under an hour. A small light usually shows charging status and tells you when it is done.
Battery life depends on the device size and how often you vape. A typical pod device lasts a full day of moderate use on one charge. We always note real battery life in our product descriptions rather than relying on the box claims.

Swapping a pod
Pod swaps take seconds. When the flavour starts to fade or the vapour thins out, the pod is nearly empty. Pull the old pod straight out and push a fresh one in until it clicks.
- Notice the flavour weakening or the vapour thinning, a sign the pod is low.
- Pull the empty pod straight out of the device.
- Take a fresh prefilled pod and remove any protective seal.
- Push the new pod in firmly until it clicks into place.
- Let it sit for a minute so the coil wicks fully, then vape as normal.
Why the draw feels tight: mouth to lung
Most prefilled pod systems use a mouth to lung draw. That means you draw the vapour into your mouth first, then breathe it down, much like pulling on a cigarette. The airflow is tight rather than airy.
This tight draw suits nicotine salt e liquid, which is the type usually found in prefilled pods. It gives a smooth throat hit and good flavour without a huge cloud, which is exactly what most ex smokers are after.
Prefilled versus open pod systems
The other type of pod vape is the open system. There the pod is empty and you fill it yourself from a bottle of e liquid, choosing your own flavour and strength. It is cheaper per millilitre but messier, and you replace the coil yourself when it wears out.
A prefilled system trades that flexibility for simplicity. There is nothing to pour, no coil to fit, and no risk of overfilling. For most people who just want to vape and get on with the day, the closed prefilled pod is the easier option.
Why prefilled pods are so popular post ban
When single use disposables were banned from sale on 1 June 2025, prefilled pod kits stepped in. They keep the simplicity people liked: no filling, no mess, just click and go. But the device is reusable, so they are legal and cheaper over time.
Because the pods are sealed and limited to 2ml, they also meet UK TPD rules cleanly. And under the volume based duty starting in October 2026, a 2ml pod attracts only a small amount of duty compared with a large bottle of liquid.
For most everyday UK vapers in 2026, a prefilled pod system is the sensible middle ground between a disposable and a fiddly refillable kit. You get convenience and compliance in one device.
Compliance and safety
Every prefilled pod kit we stock is notified to the MHRA and made to TPD and TRPR 2016 standards, with sealed 2ml pods, a 20mg per ml nicotine ceiling, and the required health warnings. The devices are rechargeable and reusable, so they are not caught by the single use disposable ban. We operate age verified checkout, secure UK payment, and UK based dispatch. Frequently asked questions
-
What is a prefilled pod system?
It is a rechargeable vape made of a battery device and a sealed pod that comes already filled with e liquid and a coil. When the 2ml pod empties you replace it with a fresh one, while the device is reused for months. It is also called a closed pod system.
-
How does a prefilled pod vape work?
The rechargeable battery powers a coil inside the pod, which heats the liquid into vapour as you inhale. Most are draw activated, so there is no button. A wick feeds liquid onto the coil, and you swap the whole pod once it runs out.
-
Are prefilled pods refillable?
No. Prefilled pods are sealed and designed to be replaced rather than refilled by hand. When one runs empty you fit a new pod. This is what separates a closed prefilled system from an open system that uses bottled liquid.
-
What is the difference between a prefilled pod and an open pod?
A prefilled or closed pod arrives filled and is replaced whole. An open pod is empty and you refill it yourself with bottled e liquid. Prefilled pods are simpler and tidier, while open pods give more choice of liquid and strength.
-
How long does a prefilled pod last?
A 2ml pod typically lasts a day or two for an average vaper, though heavy use empties it faster. You will notice the flavour fading and the vapour thinning as it runs low, which is your cue to swap in a fresh pod.
-
How do I charge a prefilled pod device?
You charge the battery device, not the pod, usually through a USB C port. Most reach full charge in under an hour and last a day of moderate use. A status light normally shows when charging is complete.
-
What is a closed pod?
A closed pod is the sealed, prefilled pod used in a closed pod system. It is filled at the factory and is not meant to be opened or refilled. You replace it as a whole unit once the liquid runs out.
-
Why are prefilled pods popular after the disposable ban?
They feel close to a disposable to use but the device is rechargeable, so they survived the single use ban from 1 June 2025. They are also cheaper to run over time and meet UK 2ml pod rules cleanly, which makes them an easy compliant choice.
